We’ve all known one (or had the unfortunate circumstances of knowing a few) – the mean girl who has a bad attitude, a sense of entitlement, and very few girlfriends (and they can’t seem to figure out why). They walk around with “a face” and act catty, thriving off of drama they often create themselves, and then they bellyache about how only bad things happen to them.

I’ve known em during my school years, I’ve worked with them, and I’ve had them as friends. I see them walking down the street and shopping in the malls (usually alone or with a group of guys), sitting at the hair salon and riding the bus. You can always spot the mean girls – they’re the ones with a spoon and a stick up their you-know-whats.

I can’t help but be leery of any girl who doesn’t have girlfriends. The number of friends a girl has is a tried-and-true determinant of a woman’s character. If she has a myriad of different “cliques” that she mingles with, like friends from school or various jobs she’s held, you can tell that she’s a person that ladies wanna hang with and keep in touch with. It’s a testament to her personality.

So be a mean girl if you want to. I don’t care. Just realize what you’re getting into when you befriend a mean girl, because they can come and go in a flash. And if you let em, they can also rub off on you, so proceed with caution.

I loved jewellery when I was younger… not glitzy bling-type pieces but more the trendy, kitschy stuff. I had slews of best friend charms with a myriad of girlfriends, and I always loved ID bracelets, from the time I was 13 and my dad got me a yellow-gold beauty for my birthday to the one he recently got me, this time in silver, for my 31st. I was really “into” my birthstone, which is sapphire, for awhile – I had a pair of dazzling blue star-burst earrings with a matching pendant that was a gift from my parents, and it was of course the blazing blue stone I chose my senior year for my class ring (that also boasted my affiliations with the Quill & Scroll and Thespian societies). I adored mood rings, at every age, and even now I know I would love having one, slipping it onto my finger in the morning and anxiously waiting to see which milky hue will present itself, indicating that I’m energetic or grumpy (or, apparently, hungry for waffles). I loved my watch from middle school that came with five different boldly coloured bands, interchangeable depending on the skort or overalls that I was wearing. I collected bauble rings all through high school, big tacky do-dads with fake flowers in them and decked out in glitter. My fave: A purple rectangular-front ring I bought at Claire’s and wore proudly with my homecoming dress.

But I think my all-time favourite piece was my mismatched pair of earrings – one was a plain gold ball stud and the other was a complete dolphin – yep, the top half rested on the front of your ear while the back end of the dolphin was the fastener, so it appeared as though the dolphin was LEAPING through your ear hole. Better yet, you could wear them like that OR you could wear the head on one side and the tail on the other. Very clever. My 7th grade English teacher Mr. Truesdale asked me where I got them because he said he wanted to buy his girlfriend a pair (which, by the way, completely traumatized me, as he was old, he was my teacher, he had these gross gooey white things in the corners of his mouth, and the idea of him even having a girlfriend freaked me out more than the gooey bits).

Today, wanna know what my most cherished jewellery piece is? Yep, my wedding band and engagement ring set. As corny as it sounds, everytime I look down at them, my heart swells. Lets just say the diamond isn’t gargantuan but it’s DEFINITELY a step up from a purple glittered bauble ring!

Stylish, eh? LOL

1- I hate sticky labels that won’t come off and leave a gummy film on surfaces… price tags are super annoying, especially when they’re stuck to a gift for someone. Thanks Dollarama.

2- I never wake up at night… like never. But I dream incessantly.

3- Yesterday Mike and I saw a swinging BED for the backyard, complete with canopy. Now THAT is a fantabulous idea!

4- I used to hate pears as a kid because I told my mom it felt like I was eating sand. Now I love em.

The Cranberries AND Coldplay are coming to Montreal this summer… thank goodness their shows are two months apart or I’ll have shredded vocal chords from screaming (and possibly a heart attack).

That’s right – The Cranberries, who I spent every year of high school listening to religiously, will be playing at a cozy little downtown venue – it will be my third time seeing em. And then in July Coldplay, who I’ve been obsessed with since my husband introduced me to Chris Martin playing a live version of Politik and who is also the singer of our wedding song “Green Eyes,” will be rockin’ the Bell Centre (Mike and I saw ‘em there once and then again at Osheaga). I lost my voice for four days after my first Coldplay show. And also severely embarrassed my other half with my hootin’, hollerin’, crying, screaming, and the like.

Third time will be a charm with these two bands.

OMG I better start soothing my throat with tea and honey now. And I may need to wear a Depends… SOOOO EXCITED!!!!

1- I bought smelly nail polish at Clothestime while I was in high school. I had one that smelled like roses and another like Calvin Klein perfume. Wonder where I could find scented polish again…

2- I used to change my handwriting in my school days. The best was circa 1992, the all-caps with curly-q ends.

3- How often should I be bathing Theo? I like to do it regularly because he sleeps with us and gets stinky.

4- Don’t push the Q-tips too far. Just sayin’.

5- If something smells or tastes bad, don’t ask me to smell or taste it. I won’t.

There are a lot of little boys in my circle of mommy-friends, so it’s really exciting when a little girl enters the mix. And I’m sooooo elated that two of my bestest friends (not to mention one of whom is my cousin) just welcomed baby Madison into the world this morning. I have little pink clothes wrapped in my craft room and brownies cooling (the new mommy always has gestational diabetes during her pregnancy and is a fan of my brownies… while she’s in labour I’m stirring batter and whipping up icing).

I love when I have to go to the hospital but it’s to go to the maternity ward, and I get to hear the sounds of babies crying and parents cooing.

And it fills my heart with happiness… I’m so grateful for new little people who come into my life to love and hold and make new memories with.

Happy birthday baby Madison!
